How to burn safely.

  • Do not burn in hot and dry weather or when it is windy.
  • Prefer cloudy and wet days.
  • Take your mobile phone with you to alert someone in case of fire.
  • Do not conduct burns alone.

HOW TO CONDUCT A BURN

  • Make small piles. If you have a lot of residue, make different piles and burn them in turns.
  • Move residue piles you are going to burn away from pastures, bushes, scrublands or trees.
  • Use a hoe to remove all vegetation around the pile, creating a fuel break at least half a metre wide and wet it well.
  • Always have a container with water or a connected hose nearby.
  • Remain vigilant. If a spark flies, put it out immediately.
  • Keep an eye on wind speed and direction as it can cause the burn to spiral out of control. Do not inhale the smoke. Protect yourself by covering your nose and mouth with a damp cloth. Smoke inhalation can be fatal.
  • Never leave a burn until the fire is out.
